Volunteer Training Opportunities for 2026
Course: Responder Zero: Be the First to Act
Open to: All Ready for Anything & Community Emergency Response Team volunteers
Empowering our volunteers to save lives when minutes matter most.
About the Course
When a medical emergency occurs, the person already on the scene—the "Responder Zero"—is often the deciding factor in a patient's survival.
While professional responders are dispatched immediately, the gap between the incident occurring and their arrival is critical. This bespoke 4-hour immersive training, delivered by LIVES, bridges that gap. You will move beyond basic first aid to master the high-pressure skills needed to stabilise a patient in those first few minutes.
What You Will Achieve
- Master Scene Assessment: Evaluate emergency environments quickly and safely.
- Control Catastrophic Bleeding: Hands-on experience with life-saving equipment for major haemorrhages.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): Build mastery in high-quality CPR and AED (defibrillator) use.
- Infection Control: Learn to protect both yourself and the patient.
- Certification: Earn a recognised LIVES Responder Zero Certificate (valid for one year).
Important Information
- Limited Capacity: Places are strictly limited to 12 delegates per session to ensure high-quality, hands-on instruction.
- Eligibility: Exclusive to registered "Ready for Anything" and "CERT" volunteers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this training for?
This training is specifically for active members of Community Emergency Response Teams and Ready for Anything volunteers. It is designed for those who want to be able to provide life-saving support within their local community during the "Zero Minute"—the time before an ambulance arrives.
Do I need prior medical experience?
No. While a basic understanding of first aid is helpful, the LIVES Responder Zero course is designed to take you from a standing start to being a confident, capable responder. We cover everything from the basics of scene safety to advanced bleed control.
Why are places limited to 12 people?
We keep classes small to ensure that every volunteer gets significant hands-on time with the equipment (such as manikins and trauma kits) and direct feedback from the LIVES instructors.
What should I bring with me?
- Clothing: Please wear comfortable, practical clothing (trousers are recommended) as you will be practicing skills on the floor.
- ID: Please bring your volunteer ID badge.
- Refreshments: For daytime sessions, tea and coffee facilities will be provided.
Is there a cost for the training?
No, all training is provided free of charge to you, the volunteer
What happens if I need to cancel?
Because places are so limited, we ask that you give us at least 7 days' notice if you cannot attend. This allows us to offer your spot to another volunteer on the waiting list.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion of the 4-hour session, you will receive a LIVES Responder Zero Certificate, which is valid for one year.
