Flood Awareness Week marks start of stormy weather
Lincolnshire residents are being urged to be more prepared for flooding by taking a few simple actions.
Despite this summer’s dry weather, we’re warning people not to be complacent about the risk of flooding – dry ground can actually be more likely to flood.
As part of Flood Awareness Week, we’re highlighting the simple actions you can take as we approach the stormier winter months.
What should you do?
- Check your flood risk: Search “prepare for flooding” on www.gov.uk
- Sign up for free flood warnings from the Environment Agency.
- Prepare a flood kit with essentials like torches, warm clothing, and key documents.
- Community groups play a vital role in sharing information, supporting vulnerable neighbours, and coordinating local response efforts. We help local parish councils and community groups make plans and prepare.
Flood Action Week, running this year from 13-19 October, is the Environment Agency’s annual campaign to encourage people to prepare for flooding by taking proactive steps such as knowing their flood risk, preparing a flood plan, and signing up for flood warnings.
It’s crucial to ensure that people are aware of the risk. Data shows that around 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are in areas at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea or surface water – yet polling shows 45% of the public have not looked up the flood risk for their home.
